Skill Tester! Flying the Samos Approach – Part II |
Last time we discussed the VOR and NDB approaches, which are the ones offered by ATC in FS2004. They are also the approach plates you will find. But in reality, commercial airliners do hardly ever use these approaches. They use the "visual south" approach, which is the topic for today.

Warm Engines… Cold Mountains… |
When most people hear someone mention “bush flying” it immediately brings to mind the drama and romance of expert, tough, grizzled, no nonsense pilots flying in rugged country in all sorts of weather. They may be flying on a rescue mission or taking sportsmen to remote hunting and fishing locations in the wilderness of Alaska or Canada…

Bride of a Flight Sim Zombie – FS Fiction |
“My name is Louise Parks and my husband claims to have two brains. He says there is a small brain that keeps him breathing (but mute) until breakfast and supplies power to the other, larger brain which fires up at about 8.00am…or whenever he is ready to push-back from the kitchen table and head off to work…”

RealWorldATC – Reaching a New Level in Online Flight Simulation |
My name is Scott McHarg. I’m 37 and the I.T. Director for a major corporation in Arizona, United States… For the past two years, I have been collecting as many ideas as I could and have developed what I believe is the most complete virtual simulation available in today’s market. It’s called RealWorldATC.

Shared Skies: The Multiplayer ATC Module |
A guide to using and getting the most out of the Flight Simulator X: Shared Skies experience. We take a look at the multiplayer ATC module.
From the EDITOR..
One of the big news stories in the flight sim world to emerge recently was the announcement that Microsoft will be releasing an expansion pack for Flight Simulator X. Be sure to check the news section this issue for more details. But more importantly, it appears Microsoft is also working on a service pack for FSX that will supposedly address key performance issues end users are having with the simulator. Let’s hope that when Service Pack 1 arrives that it boosts the average sim frame rate enough to make the sim flyable for those with anything less than a mega-computer! Time will tell.
As I write this I am preparing to head off to Australia’s premier airshow – the Australian International Airshow held at Avalon, in Victoria. It is the aussie equivalent of Oshkosh or the Paris airshows, and every bit as interesting. It is one of the four biggest airshows in the world. These shows are always great to attend to check out the latest in aviation technology, and sim technology too. Not to mention the jaw-dropping aerial displays that “wow” the crowds on a daily basis. If you ever get the chance to go to one of these feasts of everything aeronautic, don’t pass on the opportunity. They are great fun, informative, and show exactly what all our favorite sims do their best at trying to replicate! We will of course have a full airshow roundup next issue, so you wont miss any of the excitement.
Well, I had better get back to packing my bags, and finishing this issue! As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions on magazine content. We always do our best to incorporate your ideas or requests into future issues, so keep the emails coming!
