The Art of Instrument Flying |
Position fixing is a relatively easy task in VFR conditions. You simply look outside the window to spot prominent landmarks and then reference them against your map to locate your current position. In IFR conditions however, where visibility may be down to 0, it is not so simple to look out the window and spot these landmarks or features. Pilots must rely on their navigational equipment, charts and various position fixing techniques to accurately determine their current location over the ground. Today we will introduce you to some of these fixing techniques.

From the EDITOR..
Greetings from the Computer Pilot Team! We hope you are enjoying the magazine so far in 2003 and look forward to presenting the magazine to you throughout the rest of the year and for years to come.
There has been a ‘changing of the guard’ in terms of writers here at Computer Pilot. Long time magazine lesson writer, Brent McColl, is moving on to other career prospects and will no longer be contributing to the magazine. I would personally like to thank Brent for his contribution of fine quality lessons over the years. They have always been well-written and easy to follow and have certainly taught many, many virtual pilots how to fly and use their sims to their fullest extent. Good luck in your ‘new career’ Brent!
Taking the reigns will be Peter James, a highly-respected flight simulator enthusiast. Peter James has long been active in the flight simulation community as a key developer of FlightSim.Com and as the lead designer in Looking Glass' Flight Unlimited III. Peter now works full-time as a captain at Cape Air, a regional airline based in MA and FL, (USA) flying the 9-seat twin Cessna 402C. Peter also flies a Pilatus PC-12 for a fractional company based in New Hampshire. With over 3500 hours of real flight experience, and almost the same amount of time as a simulator pilot, Peter is happy to help fellow simmers get the most out of their hobby. Peter lives in MA with his wife and two young boys (ages 2 and 4) – flight simmers in the making!
We welcome Peter aboard and we are sure his knowledge in both the real world and simulated aviation will prove invaluable to our readers. You will find Peter’s work starting in next month’s issue of Computer Pilot Magazine – The World’s #1 Flight Simulator Magazine!
