FLIGHT LESSONS
Heavy Jet Limitations
Realistic simulation of heavy jet aircraft requires the virtual pilot to fly within the aircraft’s limits. Knowing the limits of your plane is crucial to achieve safe flight and keep you well away from a potentially nasty situation. Captain Charlie takes a look at such limitations in today’s lesson.
Carburetor Heat
Understanding how carburetor heat can improve flight safety is an essential part of a virtual pilot’s knowledge bank. Greg Trainer provides an excellent, well-illustrated lesson covering everything you will need to know to understand this important aircraft ‘tool’.
Fuel Management Jetliner Style
Peter James shows you how some simple fuel calculations will almost guarantee you will never be caught ‘high and dry’ on your next jetliner flight

Commercial Demos/Files
If heavy jets or combat sims are not your style, perhaps microlights or parachutes might fit the bill? If this is the case then you might enjoy trying the demo version of MicroFlight 4, the latest standalone flight simulator from Ilan Papini. The demo version can be found on this month’s Cover CD as well as other interesting demos and files from the Commercial sector. We also have some new and updated Flight Simulator 2004 SDKs for you to read up on and put the knowledge to work in your add-on design endeavors!

Virtual Holidays – Flying Tenerife
Francois laps up the sun, sand and airspace in the Canary Islands. Join him as he treks the remarkable landscape of this holiday destination in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean!

When Things Go Wrong
Not every flight is perfect, and not every aircraft is always safe. Nasty weather, bad planning, or just a few rounds for an enemy opponent can dampen your day, not to mention your aircraft. Often, however, aircraft damage is not realistically displayed in our sims. Andrew Jones finds those sims with the best damage modeling, and those that never seem to get a scratch!

Inside FlightSim.Com
Arturo Weiss takes a look at one of the web’s premiere flight simulation sites and file archives. Find out how the website started, what its goals are and discover the people behind the scenes that bring it all together

Top Gun Fighter School – The F-15 Eagle
“The original brief put to the designers of the F-15 Eagle was to produce a fixed wing fighter with range; was relatively light and agile with a good power-to-weight ratio coupled with a good climb rate. In terms of the design of the cockpit, the overriding concern centered on freeing up the pilot from 'distraction' in an aim to keep his head out of the cockpit.” Derek ‘Baron’ Davis will first show you how to ‘keep your head’ in this fighter school chapter.

Using the Garmin GPS Part II
Learn how to perform precision and non-precision approaches with the Garmin 295 and 500 in the second part of our exclusive FS2004 tutorial designed to improve your virtual flight skills.

X-Plane Nuts & Bolts – Scenery Design
Everything you ever wanted to know about scenery design, but were afraid to ask. That just about sums up Chuck Bodeen’s article this issue.

Jetliners Swarm the Flight-Sim Airspaces…
“Machismo at its commercial best.” You know that with a title like that, Bill Stack will certainly have something to say about it!

The Real Virtual World
The world of online flight simulation is diverse and unique. Find out how to acquire the tools you need to be flying online with thousands of other pilots from around the world. You will never fly alone again.

From the EDITOR..

Welcome to the May issue. As you are reading this, I am probably working on my tan down at the beach with lemonade in one hand, and a copy of Computer Pilot magazine in the other. Yes that’s right, I’m taking a long-overdue holiday in May which means the July issue will be edited by other CP team members. I have managed to plan content ahead of time for them so hopefully all goes according to plan and runs smoothly. I have every confidence in them and I am sure they will be just as excited at getting their hands dirty on an issue of Computer Pilot as I will be relaxing in the sun!

Since we haven’t run a big prize draw in recent months, we decided to go all out this issue and offer up some fantastic IL2 Forgotten Battles prize packs. We are giving away ten prize packs, the top two being worth several hundreds of dollars alone! Check out Page 9 for the competition details and get your entries in for your chance to win big!

As well as all the great article content this issue including Doug Horton’s final chapter in the Garmin GPS tutorial, this month’s Cover CD also features some top quality freeware aircraft for FS2002 and FS2004 fans. Milton Shupe and his team have kindly allowed us to include their amazing Dash 7 and AeroCommander models - some of the most popular downloads ever! A special thanks to the Milton and his team. We also have some great videos from the X-Plane simulator provided by Jim Kallinen, plus a full free weather configuration article by Peter James that was just too big to fit in the magazine as an extra bonus!

So what are you waiting for? Turn the page and continue on to the world’s only monthly flight simulation magazine – Computer Pilot! Now, where did I put that sunscreen?
